The Psalmist has cause to describe the bible as the promises of the Lord. He states in Psalm 119 verse 120, 'Your promises have been thoroughly tested and your servant loves them.' A promise is an undertaking by one person to do something to or for another person. This may or may not be after certain conditions have been met. The Word as God's promises is unique in many respects. For example, whereas one man may fail to fulfil a promise which he freely made to another man, God never fails. His Word never changes. As these promises are already laid down, man only needs to meet the conditions for getting them activated. What is more, God's promises cover all aspects of human life.
The Lord Jesus Christ who is God the Son promises eternal life, being the greatest of God's promises, to all who would believe in Him as Saviour and Lord. Hear the Lord in John 11 verses 25 and 26: ''I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?'' The Lord also states in John 5 verse 24, ''Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life.''
It is by being conversant with the bible that man can know what the promises of God are to those who would dare to take Him at His Word. Those who with faith, patience, perseverance, consistency, obedience, constancy and humility claimed the promises of God were many. These were all described as heroes and heroines of faith in the eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews. The writer of Hebrews described these men and women as those 'who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength, and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.'
