Titanic tours set to launch with submarine taking tourists down to wreck for £86,000 round trip ticket
Fewer people have seen the ill-fated ship since it sank on its maiden voyage 105 years ago than have walked on the moon or climbed Mount Everest - but that's about to change
A tour operator is set to offer tourists the chance to explore the wreck of the Titanic- at a cost of £86,000 for a round trip.
Nine tourists at a time will journey to the floor of the Atlantic ocean in a submarine - some 4,000m (13,123ft) down - for a glimpse of the ship which sank on its maiden voyage 105 years ago.
The extraordinary trip is expected to prove popular with scientists, archaeologists, wannabe explorers and the rich.
The submersible will take tourists over the the sunken ship's deck - taking in sights like its famous grand staircase - glimpsed by very few since it famously hit an iceberg and sank on April 15 1912.
The luxury travel firm behind the trip, Blue Marble Private, is promising a "once-in-a-lifetime... epic experience".
It said: "Far fewer people have visited the wreck of the Titanic than the number who have been to space or summited Mount Everest .
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and an expedition designed only for those with a truly adventurous spirit".
The eight day package will begin off the coast of Canada in Newfoundland.
From there a seaplane or helicopter will carry passengers to a support yacht.
They will spend the first two days taking instruction over the working of the ship.
Sky News reports that, after orientation sessions, the passengers can then:
Blue Marble said on its promotional literature: "Commencing in 2018 with further dives scheduled for 2019, the 8-day journey which we are crafting with the development team at OceanGate Inc, will take just 9 adventurers at a time from the coast of Newfoundland, Canada on a deep ocean discovery to the Titanic.
"Reaching depths of 4,000 metres in a specially designed titanium and carbon fibre submersible, guided by a crew of experts, you will glide over the ship’s deck and famous grand staircase capturing a view that very few have seen, or ever will."
The Titanic was sailing from Southampton to New York when more than two thirds of the 2,224 passengers and crew died.
