Groves lands a left hook en route to a points win
Although it took place during the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS), George Groves has retained his WBA super-middleweight title with a unanimous points victory over Chris Eubank Jr. He is due to face the winner of next weekend’s second semi-final — between Liverpool’s Callum Smith and Jürgen Brähmer, in Nuremberg — in the final on June 2, probably at the O2 arena in London. This is if he recovers from the injuries he sustained during the fight.
Eubank's defeat was hardly a surprise to trained eyes. There was the absence of tactics. He mostly trains himself, concentrating on fitness and leaving the fighting to his instincts. Yet he found himself stuck on the outside, without the knowhow of how to close the range. When he did get close, he was often exposed to Groves’s hard, short right hand and was then tied up in a clinch.
