Two Gazelle helicopters from the army’s Light Aviation School crashed near Carcès lake

A total of five French soldiers lost their lives when two French army helicopters collided in mid-air and crashed.  The accident happened this morning.

Three soldiers were found dead amid the wreckage of one helicopter and two in the second.

The sixth soldier is still unaccounted for with unconfirmed reports that both helicopters were each carrying three people.

An aviation expert, Michel Polacco, said: “Unfortunately it can happen that people get too close to each other whilst flying in a patrol. There are very precise procedures . . . but this type of accident does happen.”
