State media has reported that Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, the eldest son of the late Cuban president Fidel Castro committed suicide this morning. He was 68.
''Fidelito'' as he was popularly known, had been treated by a group of doctors for several months due to deep depression.
He had actually initially been hospitalised for his condition and then continued with outpatient follow-ups.
He was a product of Castro’s first marriage to Mirta Diaz-Balart.
He was trained in the former Soviet Union as a scientist. Fidel Jr helped to usher in the development of a nuclear power programme in the Communist-ruled country.
By the time he died he had served as a scientific adviser to the Cuban government and was vice-president of the country’s Academy of Sciences.
