World's longest underwater cave

A scuba diver measures the length of the Sac Actun cave in Mexico, which is part of the Dos Ojos cavern system

The 216-mile long maze of caverns was found off the eastern coast of Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula

The discovery of the biggest flooded cave on the planet is expected to help shed light on the ancient Maya civilisation.  The cave is known as Sac Anctun.

The Gran Acuifero Maya (GAM) is a project dedicated to the study and preservation of the subterranean waters of the Yucatan peninsula.

GAM director and underwater archaeologist Guillermo de Anda hailed the discovery as an 'amazing' find.
He also disclosed that it would help to understand the rich culture of the region, which was dominated by the Maya civilisation before the Spanish conquest.

The Yucatan peninsula is studded with monumental relics of the Maya people, whose cities drew upon an extensive network of sinkholes linked to subterranean waters known as cenotes.

Some cenotes acquired particular religious significance to the Maya, whose descendants continue to inhabit the region.
