Atuleer : China's cliff village

Chinese village accessible only by climbing steep ladders up a sheer 800m cliff face

Atuleer is located in the Sichuan province and is home to 500 people.

The village will now receive £71 million to pay for a cable car that China hopes will bring wealthy tourists.  The new funds, provided by a private tourist agency and a state-owned investment company, have become necessary after shocking images emerged in 2016 of children scaling the cliff face to get to school.

The money will be used to turn Atuleer into a tourist destination, opening boutique hotels and spas to take advantage of nearby hot springs and installing the cable car so that holidaymakers can take in the spectacular views.

Pachayouge, the village chief spoke to Chengdu Business Daily:
“In the past we have relied on local produce for income but tourism would inject a new life into the village and is the lasting way for villagers to rid themselves of poverty.”

Tourists seem to have already fallen in love with the village after the photographs of the school children made it internationally known and attracted thrill-seekers to try the cliff-hugging ladders.
