British Prime minister meets President Xi Jinping

Theresa May was leading a delegation representing 50 businesses on a three-day trade mission to China

The British prime minister has rightly said that the UK and China will not always see eye to eye but as partners committed to global free trade both can definitely work together to collaborate on challenges that affect all of our economies.

Mrs May added that she was prepared to challenge the Peoples' Republic on steel dumping and its investment initiative connecting Asia with eastern Europe.

Hear the prime minister:
“I want to step up our relationship with China as it opens up its markets, spreads its prosperity and embraces free trade. And I want to see that this happens in a way that protects our values, ensures global security, and advances the multilateral system and the rules for which we have fought so hard.”

The prime minister lands in Wuhan today, where she will speak at Wuhan University and visit the Yangtze River.
