Shortage of teachers becomes a crisis in British schools

It was discovered that there were 10,000 fewer secondary school teachers in 2016 than 2010, a fall of 5 per cent. According to the public accounts committee (PAC), many left the classroom because of the heavy workload and poor morale.

The truth is that there are also people who left the profession because of the seriously unruly behaviour of children and young people.   Many of these children simply make the lives of their teachers impossible. There were cases where teachers have been attacked or killed by their own students.  So why should anyone wait to be killed when there could be far less dangerous ways to earn a living.

The PAC further stated that too much money had been spent on schemes to recruit teachers, with varying results, and not enough on retaining experienced staff.  It calculated that spending on recruitment was 15 times greater than that on measures to keep teachers in the job.

In 2015-16 schools could only fill half their vacancies with properly qualified and experienced teachers. The PAC accused Department for Education officials of “watching on, scratching their heads, as more teachers quit.”
