Andres Villas-Boas, 40, has managed some of the world's biggest soccer clubs including Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur
Whenever soccer managers are sacked or resign, they get another job or are ushered into a television studio where they become paid armchair critics or commentators. Certainly, they do not take part in a race in which more than 75 people have been killed.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager is in philosophical mood as he contemplates the start of the Dakar Rally on Saturday. He faces driving through dunes, mountains and city streets in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
Villas-Boas’s wife is still in shock that he quit his job at Shanghai SIPG to compete in the Dakar. However, the likeable Portuguese said,
“Motor racing is in my blood and has been my passion since I was a little boy. As for the mortal risks, you know it can happen but you just accept it and move on. Enzo Ferrari once said you sacrifice everything without hesitation to satisfy this mania.
