The Summer Palace in Beijing was first built in 1750. It was destroyed during the war of 1860 but was restored to its original foundations in 1886.

It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres, three quarters of which is water.
The Palace is located 8 kilometres northwest of the walls of the former Imperial City section of Beijing.
