THE STRUGGLES OF JOSE MOURINHO

R

IBRAHIMOVIC DEFENDS MANAGER

Some are beginning to wonder why Jose Mourinho is struggling in the Premier League.  This has been the case since he took over the reins at Manchester United.  For the records, the Red Devils are lying 5th in the table.  For those who have been following his career, this is an unusual situation for the Portuguese.  Wherever Jose has been, he has always been number one or thereabouts.  If in doubt, check his records at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

However, one of his key players at United, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is not unaware of the situation and the raised eyebrows.  He has moved quickly to defend his manager.  According to Ibra, the players at Manchester United, apart from himself, are substandard.  He believes that those who brought these players to the club should be blamed and not Jose.

A close look at these developments has only confirmed what many people have suspected all along.  This is that Mourinho is incapable of building for success, he merely buys success.  He only assembles ready-made, world-class players and works them to the bones in order to achieve success.

While it is important to have very good players, it must be emphasised that the players at United are not particularly bad.  If these United players were that bad, Sir Alex Ferguson would not have been able to win the Premier League with largely the same set of players only a few years ago.

It must be pointed out that some of the players that Mourinho jettisoned at Chelsea, for example, because he considered that they were not ready, are now flying in their new clubs.  I'm referring to Romelu Lukaku of Everton, Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City and Ryan Bertrand of Southampton.  Lukaku is presently the top scorer in the Premier League.
My conclusion is that Jose Mourinho is a good manager and not a great one.
