SPHERES OF INFLUENCE : AMERICA AND RUSSIA IN SYRIA

WAR IS NOT AN OPTION

There seems to be no doubt that President Vladimir Putin felt humiliated when Russia's ally, Syria was recently hit by the US.  The Russians are shocked and angry that despite all their attempts to court Donald Trump, this has happened.  They may now believe that their sphere of influence is being threatened by America.

As Putin must never be seen by his people to be losing ground to the Americans, Russian and Iranian forces have moved quickly to warn Donald Trump that they would retaliate with military action if he launched more airstrikes on Bashar al-Assad's forces.  This is an ominous threat raising the prospect of war.

Both the Americans and the Russians must make moves to resolve their differences over Syria.  It is certain that the diplomatic option has not been exhausted.  Whatever happens, the Russians ought to be able to prevail on Assad that it is wrong for him to continue to gas his own people.  The world cannot afford to go back to the era of the cold war.
