An elephant has been rescued after falling 45ft into a well.
A video showed the dramatic moment ten-year-old nelly was lifted from the opening in Tamil Nadu, South India.He had wandered into a village from the jungle looking for water after becoming thirsty because of the current drought in the area.
Locals said the animal ‘kept trumpeting for help the entire night’ but villagers were too afraid to approach.
Nelly was eventually rescued when the farmer who owns the well called the government forest department on Wednesday morning.


They managed to retrieve the animal after two hours in a joint operation with the forest service.
Dr K Asokan, wildlife veterinarian at Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, who helped in the rescue, said: ‘We got a call from the owner of the farm well in the morning and immediately left for the spot.
‘A team of 15-member team of forest rangers and fire department officials toiled for two hours to bring the elephant out of the well.’
Nelly was released back into the wild.
