The car-bomb killing of journalist/blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia shook the Maltese establishment to its foundations

Whenever you mention cases of corruption in any country, the chances are that they are collaborations between politicians and business persons. This is due to the fact that in most societies around the world, people often abuse their positions in order to corner undue advantages for themselves and their families.

People involved in corruption would hardly want to be exposed. Therefore as they divine their next move in their darkrooms of political and entrepreneurial sorcery, one thing they try to do is to cover their tracks. Their plans to do this do not always succeed as their cover usually is blown.

Daphne Caruana Galizia probably knew the dangers involved when she started uncovering cases of corruption in Malta. She continued anyway.

The Maltese journalist was making powerful enemies as a result of her exposés of corruption. Not surprisingly, these adversaries nervously went back to the drawing board to device a way to stop a noisy journalist. They came up with the idea of forcing her to join her ancestors. This they did when she was murdered on October 16, 2017.

As is wont with humans, Galizia's killers thought that killing her would end all matters and that they would live happily ever after. However, they were mistaken as what goes around often comes around.

More than two years on, Caruana Galizia’s supporters can dare to hope justice may finally be done. Believe it or not, two nights ago, Yorgen Fenech, one of Malta’s most prominent businessmen, was charged with complicity in her murder. If found guilty he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Also, three key figures close to Joseph Muscat, the man who has run the country since 2013, had already departed in the past week. There are reports that the prime minister himself is poised to step down.
