Chinese journalists are being forced to pass an exam on President Xi’s thoughts and directives to renew their press cards
China loves to enjoy the fruits of capitalism without willing to abide by its tenets. One of these tenets is freedom from coercion. However, the Chinese want to control everyone and everything.
In a ploy to continue their stranglehold on the press, over 220,000 journalists across China will be taking a test on the country's leader. In the exam, they must answer a series of questions about President Xi’s remarks on national governance, cyber management, the country’s strategic goals and overseas propaganda work.
Reporters in China are routinely required to take political exams to keep their press credentials. However, this year’s test is unusual in that it is about President Xi and his thoughts. Mr Xi has abolished limits on presidential terms to allow himself to rule for life. He has also made his political thoughts part of the country’s constitution that must be obeyed by 1.4 billion Chinese citizens.
Journalists are now required to learn his words by heart. Publishing houses and media groups are required to hold group study sessions of at least 24 hours to prepare their reporters for the 60-minute test. Journalists must answer 80 out of 100 questions correctly to pass and be eligible for a new press card that expires in five years. Those who fail the test are allowed to retake it.
You then wonder why most Chinese citizens want to leave their country.
