Built on the Tibetan plateau, the Mila Mountain tunnel in China has become part of the highway linking Lhasa with Nyingchi in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The tunnel, which took four years and four months to build, is at an altitude of more than 15,400ft (4,700m).
The distance between Lhasa and Nyingchi is about 245 miles. The 3.5-mile tunnel should now halve the journey time to about four hours.
