Reinvention : From teenage alcoholic to Supreme Court judge

Brett and Ashley Kavanaugh

Barring any unforeseen incident, Brett Michael Kavanaugh should be confirmed as a Supreme Court judge within the next 72 hours. It would depend on Republican leaders having the votes to confirm Mr Trump’s nominee to the nation’s highest court. This was after an FBI investigation found no support for sexual misconduct allegations.

However, this has not stopped some people from protesting against the judge's elevation. More than 300 protesters were arrested in Washington for demonstrating against the nomination of the 53-year-old judge.

Kavanaugh's journey to the ultimate court in the United States has been a long and arduous one. He was an alcoholic, a sex abuse suspect and an alleged flasher. Lately, he served as a Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

It is not often that people want to look at the bright side of things. It would be recalled that during his Senate Committee appearance, Kavanaugh admitted that he and his friend Mark Judge had a serious drink problem when they were teenagers. Therefore, firstly, the fact that the Supreme Court nominee did not end up in rehab but in university was the first good development. Surprisingly, however, the beer-loving Kavanaugh continued his heavy drinking at Yale. Somehow, he managed to complete his studies.

My take on his post-university years is that he must have grown out of his alcoholism otherwise he would not have become an attorney and a judge. Remember that he also served under the second President Bush. Strangely, people are reluctant to talk about this reinvention.

However, what will not be forgotten in a hurry is that Kavanaugh's years of youthful indiscretions nearly derailed his ascension to the Supreme Court.  It is interesting to note that it was when the time came for him to be elevated to the highest point in his profession that the women began to crawl out of the woodwork.  Although the chances were that if he had made his peace with those women all those years ago by confessing his sins, asking for their forgiveness and making restitution, they would have forgiven him and buried the hatchet.  Kavanaugh failed to do this thereby leaving in his trail all the simmering resentment.

The lesson in the case is this, especially for all those who are determined to make heaven after their earthly sojourns.  Never be comfortable with any known unconfessed sin, ask for forgiveness from God and from humans and always make all your restitutions fully.  As a result of failure to do these things, many people will be denied entry into the holy city at the Pearly Gates.
