The Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is also known as GRU. The Directorate is Russia's largest foreign intelligence agency.
During the Cold War era KGB was the counterpart of CIA, although it performed some of FBI functions. After the fall of the USSR, KGB was disbanded and its responsibilities divided among several organizations. GRU is the Russian Military Intelligence Service, a unit in the Russian Army.
The activities of the ruthless intelligence agency were this week again thrust into the public arena after reports confirmed that two of its agents were responsible for the attempted murders of double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
While there are not many angels in the business of foreign espionage, GRU agents are reputed to be in a class of their own. It is a mark of its ruthlessness that the Russian organisation has always been involved in aggressive, covert operations abroad, including assassinations and sabotage.
Our sources have confirmed that The GRU has no code and therefore has no allegiance to a spying code of honour. There are also reports that the GRU has its own assassination department where sophisticated methods for killing Russia’s perceived enemies abroad are developed.
