Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel also discussed Ukraine and the controversial Nord Stream gas pipeline during the summit

At the talks, President Putin made it clear that Europe should help rebuild President Assad’s Syria to allow refugees to return home and to prevent new flows of migrants.

On Ukraine, Mrs Merkel pressed Mr Putin to accept the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping force to monitor a ceasefire between Ukrainian military forces and Russia backed separatists in the Donbass region.
