Thousands of members of the armed forces from Asian and Pacific nations will take part in the Kakadu military exercises
Kakadu, the biennial series of war games involving fleets and thousands of personnel from Asia and Pacific nations, will take place next month. The fact that China has been invited by Australia to take part in the exercises will be seen as an attempt to ease relations strained by Beijing’s rapid regional military and economic expansionism.
The US will also be coming. Overall 27 nations have been invited to Kakadu.
Marise Payne, Australia’s defence minister, said :
“China is expected to participate in . . . activities including passage exercises, intership communications and replenishment activities and sea-training manoeuvres.”
