No one has been able to come up with a defensible, provable estimate of Vladimir Putin's net worth. First and foremost, he is not a businessman. Therefore, he is not likely to want to flaunt his wealth.
However, those who should know have been throwing up all sorts of figures.
Celebritynetworth.com has a conservative estimate of $70 billion. Incidentally, this matches the figure Russian political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky gave the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in 2012.
Forbes has been able to track money tied to Mr Putin’s allies. This may indicate that the Russian leader's wealth is being held by his friends.
Hear exiled Russian banker, sergei Pugachev :
"Everything that belongs to the territory of the Russian Federation Putin is considered to be his.
''Any attempt to calculate [Putin's net worth] won’t succeed. He’s the richest person in the world until he leaves power."
Just last year, Hermitage Capital Management CEO Bill Browder told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he believes the Russian president is "the richest man in the world" with a net worth of $200 billion.
One can then safely conclude that Mr Putin may be worth between $70 - $200 billion dollars.
