As the Germans struggle to remove half a million failed asylum seekers, one deportation that may gladden their hearts is that of former aide to terror chieftain, Osama bin Laden. It was a significant victory after an eleven year legal battle.
Sami Idoudi's application for asylum in Germany in 2007 had failed but he could not be deported. Rather, the father of four was placed under close observation for “hate preaching.” He was asked to report every day to a police station near his home in Bochum, western Germany.
In 1997, Mr Idoudi had travelled to Germany as a 'student.' Shortly after this he went to Afghanistan where he is believed to have trained in a terrorist camp and served as a bodyguard to the head of al-Qaeda when the 9/11 attacks were being planned.
Idoudi lost his case for asylum when he returned. However, a German court ruled that he could not be sent back to his native Tunisia because the chances were that he would face torture or degrading treatment.
A last-minute court ruling banning his deportation could not be upheld because he was already in the air.
