Ngolo Kante is probably the best defensive midfielder in the world. He impressed at the World Cup, where he helped France to lift the trophy. Chelsea have now demonstrated their determination to hold on to the impish midfielder by offering him a new contract worth £290,000 per week.
Kanté is being offered a five-year deal worth up to £15 million a season.
The west London club decided to move in order to stop PSG in their tracks. The Paris club have been tracking pint-sized Kante for some time now and seemed determined to lure the Frenchman to France.
It is certain that Chelsea will not allow Kanté to leave for France without a fight. The good news for the Blues is that the 27-year-old has not asked to go. It would be recalled that he helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title in his first season after joining from Leicester City two years ago and his contract ends in 2021.
It is significant to note that Kanté played in every France game at the World Cup and recovered the ball more often than any other member of the squad. His team-mate Paul Pogba said that he “must have 15 lungs.” Didier Deschamps, the manager, referred to him as the “essential element” of the triumphant side.
