Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder, who is also known as 'the guest' has been holed up in the central London embassy of Ecuador since 2012. According to reports, it now appears that his days there are numbered as he is expected to lose his asylum status.
President Moreno of Ecuador has said that the Australian should leave the embassy. Already, Mr Assange’s team are believed to be making contingency plans for him to leave in “hours, days or weeks”.
The 47-year-old took refuge at the embassy in 2012. This was after he lost an appeal against extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault that went to the Supreme Court. Eventually, the case was dropped.
Although the initial case against the Wikileaks founder was dropped, he secured political asylum at the embassy on the grounds that he faced the prospect of torture or even the death penalty should he be sent to the US to be tried for espionage and sedition. This was after US officials sought his arrest.
Mr Assange had published millions of sensitive, secret or embarrassing US government documents through Wikileaks over the past decade. These included hundreds of thousands of classified US military documents.
