Martin Selmayr, secretary general of the European Commission, was attacked for posting a series of EU flags and soccer emojis just minutes after the end of the match in Moscow
Martin Selmayr, secretary general of the European Commission, has been widely condemned for appearing to take the mickey out of England after the Three Lions were knocked out of the World Cup.
Minutes after the end of the semi-final clash between Croatia and England in Moscow, Selmayr, for reasons known only to himself, posted a series of EU flags and soccer emojis.

The message was not lost on millions of Three Lions supporters. Fans simply interpreted the message as a dig at England because it seemingly referred to the fact that two EU countries – France and Croatia – had made it to the final.
Even members of Parliament were not left out of the controversy as Tim Farron and Nadine Dorries were among those who poured scorn on Selmayr after his tweet.
Amazingly, Mr Selmayr, who is known as a fearsome bully, has maintained a deafening silence amidst all the brickbats.

The routed Three Lions
