Amidst uncertainty about the exact nature of the relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, both leaders seem fixated on an era of a 'new relationship' between their two countries.
To top it, according to the White House, President Trump has now invited President Putin to Washington this autumn. It remains to be seen whether the wily former spymaster from the East will swallow the bait.
Firstly, however, politicians from both sides of the divide would want to know the exact nature of what happened between the two leaders at Helsinki. Even top American spies are puzzled.
Hear Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence: “I don’t know what happened at that meeting.”
Both leaders would only say that the meeting had been fruitful. President Trump has insisted that the leaders discussed issues including terrorism, Israeli security, nuclear proliferation and North Korea.
On his part, President Putin has accused unnamed “forces in the United States who are ready to sacrifice Russian-American relations for the sake of their ambitions in an internal political struggle.”
