Considering that Narcissists are likely to be irredeemable attention seekers they are usually not most people's cup of tea. However, it has now been discovered that they are also surprisingly likely to be successful.
According to an international team of researchers, narcissists tend to come out on top in education, work and romance. They say it is principally because their sense of superiority gives them a "mental toughness" not to give up.
As far as psychologists are concerned, narcissism is one of the "dark triad" of malevolent personality traits. The other two are psychopathy and Machiavellianism - with narcissists having a tendency to be self-centred, vain, grandiose and to need the admiration of others.
Hear Dr Kostas Papageorgiou, a psychologist from Queen's University Belfast :
"If we could abandon conventional social morality - and just focus on what is successful then narcissism can look like a very "positive" trait.
"If you are a narcissist you believe strongly that you are better than anyone else and that you deserve reward."
