Mexico's federal police have detained 28 local officers and the local public security secretary early on Sunday morning in Ocampo, a town of 24,000 people in northwest Mexico. This followed the physical liquidation of 64-year-old Fernando Ángeles Juárez who was shot dead on Thursday outside one of his properties. He was a mayoral candidate in the forthcoming elections.

Over 100 politicians have been killed across the country in the lead up to general elections on July 1.

Federal police had arrived on Saturday to arrest Oscar González García, the public security secretary. Surprisingly, they were stopped by local police officers. They however returned with reinforcements on Sunday morning and arrested the entire force.

Believe it or not, criminal groups and gangs who usually seek to influence the elections have made this campaign the bloodiest in Mexico’s modern history.
