It would appear that the space race is assuming a new dimension with President Trump raising the idea of a Space Force

There are five branches of the United States Armed Forces namely the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force and the Coast Guard. There are now plans to add a sixth which will be called the Space Force.

President Trump recently disclosed the idea of a Space Force while presenting the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to the US Military Academy football team in the White House Rose Garden.

From all indications, the Space Force would wage war beyond the confines of this Earth.

Space has always been viewed as a future battlefield. It would be recalled that in the 1950s, American commanders floated the idea of a military base on the moon. It is hardly surprising that hundreds of satellites have been launched into orbit to gather intelligence and to coordinate conventional forces.

Not long ago General David Goldfein, the Air Force Chief of Staff, stated that combat in space was only “a matter of years” away. He then added that the air force must “embrace space superiority with the same passion and sense of ownership as we apply to air superiority today.”

Russia and China recently showed off potential new space weapons. The Chinese have tested a missile interceptor capable of destroying a target more than 60 miles outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
