May Day protests erupt around the world

In France, demonstrators in Paris destroyed shops and threw rocks at police who responded with tear gas.

Protests in Istanbul, Turkey, took an ugly turn as demonstrators clashed with armoured riot police officers.

Several protesters were detained in Istanbul on Tuesday after trying to march towards Istanbul's symbolic main square in defiance of a ban on protests there.

In the Philippines, about 5,000 people from various groups rallied near the presidential palace in Manila.

They were protesting over the failure of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to fulfil a major campaign promise to end contractualisation, the widespread practice of short-term employment.
