According to a study, Artificial Intelligence has proved to be better than doctors at spotting skin cancer
Considering that AI has now been found to pick up more cancers, experts are becoming more optimistic that within a few years machine learning will automate many diagnoses. This will not only help doctors to become more efficient, the number of mistakes made will be reduced.
A study led by Professor Holger Haenssle, of the University of Heidelberg, has confirmed that AI convincingly comes out on top against specialists in spotting cancer.
A type of machine learning named convolutional neural network was trained on 100,000 images of malignant melanoma and images of harmless moles. Malignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. This was then tested against 58 dermatologists in classifying 100 further images of some of the most difficult skin abnormalities.
The doctors were able to spot 87 per cent of melanomas, rising to 89 per cent when they had information about the age and sex of the patient. The computer, however, spotted 95 per cent, according to results published in Annals of Oncology.
