Wernher von Braun began a new role with the American rocket program after the war - his neering drawings by the infamous Nazi scientist, who was recruited by the Americans at the end of WW2 in order to help them win the Space Race against Soviet Russia have emerged for sale for £70,000.
Dr Wernher von Braun led the Nazi rocket development program during the war and was the brains behind the dreaded V-2 rocket which killed 16,000 Londoners.
But unlike other members of the German high command he was controversially not prosecuted for war crimes at the infamous Nuremburg Trials.
Instead, he was secretly transported to the US and put in charge of their fledgling ballistic missile program.

He was probably the only member of the German high command who was not prosecuted for war crimes at the Nuremburg Trials after the Second World War.

Instead of being prosecuted, the scientist was secretly transported to the US to lead their fledgling space program that faced competition from the Soviet Union.

Von Braun's Saturn V rocket successfully launched the crew - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins - on its historic eight-day mission.

In 1975, in recognition of his vast contribution to the US space exploration program, von Braun received the National Medal of Science.

He died, aged 65, in 1977.
