Wilder turns away after knocking out Ortiz
Any keen observer would say that Deontay Wilder has certainly earned the right to have a showdown with Anthony Joshua after overcoming the toughest bout of his career. In the defining duel he retained his WBC heavyweight title by knocking out Luis Ortiz in the early of hours of yesterday.
In spite of his more than three years as a world champion, Wilder needed a performance to make a statement. The consensus is that he duly delivered. Not unexpectedly, he will be ringside in Cardiff on March 31 when Joshua boxes Joseph Parker to unify the WBA, IBF and WBO titles.
Should Joshua beat Parker, there are plans for the Briton to face another unbeaten American, Jarrell Miller, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn — the venue of Wilder’s victory yesterday — on August 25.
A win over Miller in Brooklyn would boost Joshua’s profile in the States. This would result in a bout against Wilder being pay-per-view across North America, which would put substantially more money in the pot. A contract could then be agreed for them to fight twice, in the US and in Britain.
