Roberta Jacobson was the first female US ambassador to its southern neighbor

The American Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson will leave her post in May.  She joins a growing list of senior State Department officials to resign during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Ambassador Jacobson's decision comes as relations between the two nations plummet to a new low amidst Trump's threats to force Mexico to pay for a border wall and abandon the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Jacobson wrote in a statement on Twitter:
'After 31 years of serving the U.S. government, I will leave at the beginning of May in search of new opportunities.

'I leave knowing that the U.S.-Mexico relation is strong and crucial. Together we are stronger!'

The ambassador is viewed warmly by Mexicans and focused on getting the job done, a former Mexican diplomat said

Appointed by former President Barack Obama, Jacobson became ambassador to Mexico in May 2016.  This was after serving as the State Department's Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.
