The American President will meet the North Korean leader in what would be the first face-to-face encounter between the long-standing enemies
South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, has quoted Mr Trump as saying that he would meet the North Korean leader by May. The announcement was made at the White House. However, this was only after Kim promised to suspend nuclear and ballistic missile tests and to carry out talks aimed at denuclearisation.
Mr Chung spoke at the White House following a meeting with the US president. He described his talks with Kim in Pyongyang earlier this week.
Hear Mr Chung:
“Kim Jong-un said he’s committed to denuclearisation.
“Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests . . . he expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible. President Trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearisation.”
