Saudi Arabia is to embark on the world’s biggest solar-power project
It is believed that at its completion, the multi-billion dollar programme would end the country’s dependence on oil.
However, the project would result in panels taking up vast tracts of the desert equivalent to a million football pitches.
Japan's SoftBank is helping to fund the deal. Its Chief Executive, Mr Son, had signed a non-binding agreement with Prince Mohammed, who is on a two-week tour of the United States. The prince’s target is for the project to produce 200 gigawatts of electricity by 2030.
The desert kingdom has been shaken by the fall in the oil price, which has cut the country’s money reserves as ministers have struggled to balance the national budget. Similarly, other countries in the Gulf have also begun to explore alternatives to oil. The United Arab Emirates this week completed its first nuclear reactor, built by a South Korean company.
