Juncker, European Commission President, seemed to have ignored the ballot-rigging that secured Putin a new term as effective dictator
It appears that Jean-Claude Juncker is threatening to scupper a British-led Europe-wide alliance to checkmate Russia by congratulating Vladimir Putin and urging closer ties.
Other EU leaders rightly distanced themselves from his stance, with Guy Verhofstadt, the European parliament’s Brexit negotiator, saying this was “no time for congratulations.” Donald Tusk, president of the European Council who was also a former Polish prime minister and had spent his youth in the anti-communist underground, took a personal stand by refusing to send a congratulatory letter to Mr Putin.
The chances are that Mr Juncker’s letter will embolden resistance among other EU nations to adopting a tougher line on Russia, led by Britain. Notably, the bloc has so far failed to issue a statement blaming Russia for the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter on March 4. Donald Trump spoke to Mr Putin yesterday but did not raise Salisbury.
