45-year-old Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame was stabbed and shot by Redouane Lakdim as he took the place of a woman being held by the Islamist gunman.

The gunman was eventually shot dead by police.  Sadly, this was not until after he had killed three people and fatally wounded Mr Beltrame inside a supermarket at Trèbes, near Carcassonne.

Police did not think Redouane Lakdim, 26, had been radicalised

Islamic State has claimed that the 25-year-old attacker was acting in its name during the rampage which began when he wounded a policeman and a driver.  He also shot dead a car passenger before entering the supermarket - shooting shoppers and taking hostages.

The violence began at 10am when Lakdim, a convicted drug dealer of Moroccan origin, stole a car using a handgun. This was after wounding the driver and killing a passenger.

While driving away he slowed down beside four riot policemen out jogging and shot an officer in the shoulder.  At 11.15am he ran into the Super-U supermarket at Trèbes, firing at customers and staff.
