There are suspicions by investigators that Gaddafi gave Nicolas Sarkozy millions of euros to help pay for his first presidential election campaign
Mr Sarkozy was arrested this morning after being called in for questioning by French police detectives in Nanterre, outside Paris.
The former president's arrest is not unconnected with allegations that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the late Libyan despot, illegally funded his 2007 election campaign.
The Libyan tyrant was killed in 2011 after France and Britain initiated a war in Libya to end his brutal regime.
Mr Sarkozy, however, denies wrongdoing and says he is a victim of a conspiracy to discredit him.
The Libyan scandal is explosive not only because Mr Sarkozy is suspected of flouting France’s tight electoral campaign funding laws. Principally, it also raises the question of whether Paris pushed for military intervention in Libya in 2011 partly to suppress potentially damaging evidence against its then president.
