Saudi Arabia last night felt, at first hand, the horrors of the Yemen war when Houthi rebels claimed their first casualty in Riyadh since the kingdom joined the civil war in Yemen three years ago. The rebels had fired ballistic missiles into the desert kingdom.
An Egyptian was killed and two of his countrymen were wounded by falling shrapnel in the capital.
Houthi fighters have launched dozens of missiles into Saudi Arabia over the past year, killing several people but this was the first time Riyadh was hit. Houthi-run media stated last night that the strikes were aimed at airstrips in Riyadh and the cities of Khamis Mushait, Jizan and Najran.
