The president of Peru has left. He resigned last night in a televised address, the day before he was to face an impeachment vote in congress.
Interestingly, the former Wall Street banker has denied bribe-taking allegations. He however said that his resignation was “the best thing” for the country.
The 79-year-old leader becomes the first president to lose his job over Latin America’s biggest corruption scandal, otherwise known as Operation Car Wash. This was where the Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht admitted paying millions of dollars to politicians to secure public contracts.
