The president is of the opinion that the new home of the US’s diplomatic mission in London was such a “bad deal”.

The US president has cancelled his planned visit to London for the opening of the new American embassy in the capital.

The president wrote on Twitter:
“Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts”, only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!”

The new US embassy in Embassy Gardens, southwest London, is built with security concerns in mind

Rex Tillerson, the US secretary of state, will now be expected to attend the embassy opening.  Many observers had expected Mr Trump to visit after the World Economic Forum in Davos this month.

Plans to relocate the US embassy from its current building in Mayfair were announced in late 2008, when George W Bush was president.  The new building, in Nine Elms, will open to the public on January 16.
