A NINE-year-old girl died after her 23 stone cousin sat on her as punishment for being "out of control".

Little Dericka Lindsay went into cardiac arrest after complaining she couldn't breathe when 64-year-old Veronica Green Posey crushed her.

Emergency crews were scrambled to the house on Saturday and rushed the schoolgirl to hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead.

Posey told cops in Florida she had sat on Dericka to punish her for being "out of control", Pensacola News Journal reports.

When she got off the armchair, she realised the lifeless youngster couldn't breathe and started CPR.

Posey, who weighs 23 stone, was arrested and charged with homicide and cruelty towards a child.

The girl's mum Grace Smith was charged with child neglect

The girl's parents, Grace Smith, 69, and James Smith, 62, also face charges of child neglect for failing to report the abuse.

Grace Smith was also charged with cruelty towards a child and all three were taken into custody.

She had allegedly hit her daughter with a ruler and metal pipe before Dericka ran to the armchair where she was crushed to death.

Florida Department of Children and Families said the agency is investigating Dericka’s death.

Dad James Smith was charged with neglect and failing to act on the abuse
