Many people have died as buildings across Mexico
City collapsed under the force of an earthquake measuring
magnitude 7.1.
At least 100 people have been killed across the country, with
many more trapped inside buildings that caught fire after
a powerful quake violently shook the capital.
The magnitude 7.1 quake struck close to the town of Atencingo
in the central state of Puebla, 123 km (76 miles) southeast of
Mexico City, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Mexican TV and
social media showed buildings collapsing and cars crushed by
large chunks of fallen debris.
Other videos emerging on social media show a building explode
after the quake hits, sending a giant orange fireball skyward.
Footage purporting to be from a Mexico City car park shows
a building collapse after swaying side to side.
In another clip, a fireball is sent skyward after a building explodes.
More footage posted online shows people trapped inside a
building huddled together as it violently sways.
Social media was flooded with upsetting footage from the quake,
with one video showing large chunks of debris fall from a shaking
building to the ground below.
Another claims to show river boats being rocked by the effect
of the earthquake.
It comes on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major
damage to the capital Mexico City.
Thousands of people fled buildings across the capital as they
were preparing drills for the deadly 1985 quake’s anniversary.
