Police told the Post that the gun was not purchased legally.
'He just said he obtained it many, many years ago. God knows how long ago that was,' the source added.
It remains unclear why Detres was handling the pistol in the first place.
Detres was taken to Lincoln hospital to treat his self-sustained injury. He was also placed under arrest for criminal possessing of an illegal weapon.
He was later released on his own recognizance without bond.
