Weather experts are warning people near the Texas and Louisiana coast to prepare for a hurricane and ‘life-threatening’ conditions as Tropical Storm Harvey builds strength.
Hurricane alerts have been issued for areas spanning Port Mansfield to Matagorda, including Corpus Christi.

A spokesperson for the National Hurricane Center said: ‘Heavy rainfall is likely to spread across portions of eastern Texas, Louisiana and the lower Mississippi Valley from Friday through early next week and could cause life-threatening flooding.
The high winds are expected to hit land within 36 hours.
‘A storm surge warning is now effect from Port Mansfield to San Luis Pass, Texas, indicating the possibility of life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the coast.’

Experts expect the heavy rainfall to be the most dangerous aspect of the storm (Picture: The Weather Channel)
The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before its landfall on Friday night or early Saturday.
Weather experts say the storm could intensify quickly and throw out winds of 35mph over a 24-hour period.
A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: ‘It’s also possible Harvey’s center may re-emerge over the Gulf of Mexico early next week, opening up the possibility of some restrengthening before a final landfall in Louisiana. But that remains highly uncertain, as stalled or slow-moving tropical cyclones are notoriously difficult to forecast.
‘Harvey will bring a mess of coastal impacts, including storm-surge flooding, high surf with battering waves and strong winds.
‘Perhaps the most dangerous, widespread impact, however, will be prolific rainfall and potential widespread flooding.’
