The report, carried by the KCNA news agency, said he visited a chemical institute and was briefed about the manufacturing of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
“He instructed the institute to produce more solid-fuel rocket engines and rocket warhead tips,” the report said, according to Yonhap.
Diagrams of the new missiles were seen hanging on a wall behind the tubby tyrant while he visited the plant.
One of the photos clearly showed a diagram for a missile called “Pukguksong-3,” which appears to be the latest in its Pukguksong, or Polaris, series.
Just days ago Kim visited the border with South Korea and blasted “stupid American behaviour”.
A KCNA report said: “”Dear supreme leader said that the Americans’ reckless military confrontational behavior has ended up the US trapping themselves with their own hands and are spending pathetic fate by weary minutes and seconds and that dear supreme leader will watch such stupid American behaviour for a bit longer.”
Kim threatened to fire missiles into the sea near the US Pacific territory of Guam after Trump warned North Korea it would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States.
North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and dozens of missile tests since the start of last year, significantly raising tensions on the heavily militarised Korean peninsula and in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.
A missile test on July 28 put the US mainland in range, prompting heated exchanges that raised fears of a new conflict on the peninsula.
However, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about a possible improvement in relations between the two long-term rivals.
"I respect the fact that he is starting to respect us," Trump said of Kim at a campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona, yesterday.
"And maybe - probably not, but maybe - something positive can come about," he added.
The KCNA report came not long after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson appeared to make a peace overture, welcoming what he called the recent restraint shown by the reclusive North.
