The women of England have made it three wins in three with victory over Portugal.  They had earlier put Scotland and Spain to the sword.
Having then topped their group, the Lionesses will now meet France on Sunday in the quarter-finals.

More notably, the mind games seem to have started in earnest.  When France manager Olivier Echouafni declared that England ''did not want to face us'' in the last eight of the European Championships, he knew exactly what he was doing.  Add that to the fact that the Lionesses have not beaten France since 1974, so why not make them unsure of themselves.

The gentleman deliberately lit the fuse by adding that ''nothing would stop'' his players from progressing into the semi-finals.

However, England manager Mark Sampson has refused to lie low as he joined the fray.  Referring to the France coach he said,
''He's wet around the ears when it comes to tournament football.  We're an experienced team, I'm an experienced manager.  The game isn't played in the press conference room, lucky for them.  We have three wins under our belt, France have one win under their belt.

''We go into the knockout phase with momentum and we know we've got more to give.  We will work out a way to beat France.  Congratulations to them for finishing second in their group.  We finished top.

''It's a great challenge to play France because we want to win this tournament by beating all the best teams.  We are fully aware of what they will bring.  We're confident.''

The tournament is taking place in the Netherlands.
