WANT to take up a sport but need to make sure you burn
A LOT of calories? Then boxing is what you’ve been looking for.
Getting in the ring burns packs a punch - burning more calories
per hour than any other sport, according to new research.
In just one hour in the boxing ring you burn 800 calories –
that’s more than three pieces of chocolate cake, if you were wondering.
But if you’re looking for something a bit less intense that still
burns a decent amount of calories give squash a go.
One hour on the court will see you burn 748 calories.
Boxing was the most effective at burning calories because it involves
intense interval training and also engages multiple muscle groups,
meaning it helps you burn energy for longer even after you have
finished your workout.
Squash is also a good option as rallies tend to be longer than other
racket sports, like tennis, and the breaks between points are shorter.
Plus you are almost constantly running which means you are
building up muscle strength and endurance.
Rowing came in third, with 740 calories being burned per hour
but only if you row on a river or a lake.
Rowing on a rowing machine in the gym only burns 440 calories.
None of these sports taking your fancy?
Maybe try road running.
It is the fourth most calorie burning sport at 700 calories per hour –
far more effective than doing it on a treadmill which only burns 580 calories.
In fifth place was swimming, but only if you do front crawl or
butterfly stroke, which burns 600 calories an hour.
Fancy yourself as more of a team player?
Rugby burns 614 calories an hour and football burns 612 calories an hour.
In eighth place was fast road cycling at 604 calories an hour and far more effective than a gym bike which will only help you burn 540.
An hour at the gym doing cardio and weights will see you burn 590 calories.
Hockey was the next best sport for weight loss, burning 478 calories an hour, followed by basketball at 475 and tennis at 470.
Cricket is the best of the more sedate sports burning 272 calories per hour followed by golf at 236 and table tennis at 204.
The results are from a new survey from health and well-being brand Forza Supplements, which looked at the calorie burning potential of 50 of the most popular sports.
Forza Supplements managing director Lee Smith said: “We just hope that these figures encourage more people to get active to combat our growing obesity crisis.
“Boxing is terrific for weight loss because it is the ultimate full body work-out with intense bursts of activity - just like the very best interval training.
“The figures show that any activity is better than lounging in front of the TV and, if you are going to do that, at least do it standing up and burn 20 calories an hour.
“There are lots of fun ways to burn calories particularly when you are on holiday - snorkelling at the beach burns more calories than badminton or a round of golf.
